Welcome to Stephen Taberner's websiteSTEPHENTABERNER.COM
Stephen Taberner is a singer, double bass player and composer based in the Blue Mountains of NSW. He is a unique individual, equally blessed with melancholic and quirky insights, a predeliction for curious obsessions and a formidable musical talent. Having been primarily a choirleader and jazz double bass player, it was something of a leap into left field when he decided he was a singer/songwriter and created his first CD, "Burning Slow", during 2002. The album is a lush concoction of wryly wrought love songs which feature both the old fashioned art of being beautifully written and also have production values which elicit spontaneous outbursts of joy from casual passersby. Many such outbursts have been heard, but not from any famous reviewers, yet. "Burning Slow" reflects different aspects of love in relationships including the anguish, the exhilaration and the toe wrestling. To capture these different moods Stephen has used a diverse palette of musicians, cohorts and instruments. This album is an aural road trip featuring lush vocal ensembles, demonic organ solos, string quartets, pygmy glee clubs, intimate piano ballads and filthy blues, as well as influences from Celtic and South African music, with the enigmatic and inspired guitar work of Lenny Marks. The album was conceived in the airy Big Jesus Burger Studios using the technical wizardry and intuitive guidance of Chris Townend. Other artists featured on the album include the legendary Hamish Stuart on drums and percussion and the sweetly lurid vocals of sirens Janet Swain and Robyn King.
